A flying romantic novel. Gave a nice enjoyable story of the women who flew during WWII in Britain. Three stories of friends in the ATA, civilian pilots who ferried planes across Britain. The novel includes: a rich girl, a sad mother, a young farm girl, air accidents, a possible murder, lovers, friends, jealousy, dances, lies, fights, and more. Highly recommended. Other excellent writers of fiction and non- fiction are: Laurie Graham, William Jarvis, Duncan Barrett, Margaret Mayhew, Eric Larsen, Judith Lennox, Lynn Austin, Mary Gibson, and Frances Donnally. This novel, The Beauty Chorus, will educate you and also gives you a romantic tale on the way. An A++++++++

Beauty Chorus Kate Lord Brown 9781848878709 Books Reviews

Kate Lord Brown's debut novel, The Beauty Chorus, is a stunning portrayal of the thrill-seeking ATA girls of World War II. The story begins on New Year's Eve, 1940--Evie Chase, a fiery debutante, is tired of her lacklustre lifestyle of elaborate dinner parties and the wrath of her dreadful stepmother Virginia. She decides she is going to make a contribution to the war effort by becoming an ATA pilot; her love for flying and need for adventure overpower her father's protests, and within days she sets off to White Waltham for her test flight, and her new life.

She is soon introduced to Stella Grainger, a brooding mother who has left her son in Ireland with her husband's mother for reasons she refuses to share with anyone, and Megan Jones, an optimistic teen who borderlines on naïve, determined to become a pilot and one day take over her family's farm with Bill, the love of her life. The girls live together in a small cottage during their training and throughout their careers, forming unforgettable friendships amongst the challenges of being female ATA pilots, the war being fought around them, and the wars they must confront within themselves.

While many have pegged this book to be a historical romance, it is my opinion that the romantic elements of the story--Evie and Beau, Stella and Michael, Megan and Bill--are part of a much larger, more timeless picture. These women were fiercely independent, adventurous and daring, and at a time where tradition stated a woman's identity was to be wrapped in marriage, children, and maintaining a home. They fought the tug of war we now all face on a regular basis the inner housewife, wanting the traditions of the past and the comforts of love, trapped in a strong-willed, independent woman's body, wanting the freedom to have a full identity outside of her relationship. They are the trailblazers who created the modern definition of what it means to be a woman.

The Beauty Chorus by Kate Lord Brown is an engaging and inspiring story--the connection you will feel to these characters and their journey will bring you one step closer to creating your own.
The three main characters in THE BEAUTY CHORUS come together to provide the big picture of life in Britain in the mid 1940s during World War II. Through the eyes of Megan, Stella, and Evie, the author has created an entire cast of characters including parents and love interests against the historically accurate setting of the ATA.

A hefty read at over 400 pages, you will keep turning the pages because you come to care not only about these characters, but learn about the women and men who flew aircraft around to various bases so that the fighter pilots would be able to continue to resisting the Axis powers.

Kate Lord Brown also imagines the final flight of the famous Amy Johnson, one of the most well known female pilots of the time whose aircraft went down, her body never found. Johnson provides a connecting voice early on in the novel as the seemingly disparate stories come together as the three women become roommates in a small cottage.

Death, misogyny, and war rationing are amongst the real life hardships these women grappled with during this tumultuous period and this book gives the reader a wide sense of these elements.
hated it to end
Just found this authoress and loved this book as well as The Perfume Garden - both of which I could not put down - can't wait to read more of her work. Although born during the war, I didn't realise the work the ATA carried out and the risks involved so I was able to read up on its history including Amy Johnson.
Bought for the wife and she loved it!
Brilliant read. This story shows the bravery of ATF pilots during the war. Some of it is based on fact. The pilots faced immense adversity, no weapons, no supporting planes, sometimes unairworthy planes & the constant denigration by men who thought "a woman's place is behind the kitchen sink". Really a brilliantly told story & one I shall read again & again.
