I was spellbound by this third book in the series "Abram's Daughters." I just recently reviewed The Betrayal (book 2) and although I gave it 4 stars here, my "review" was somewhat scathing. However, this book redeemed the series for me. I also don't dislike Leah nearly as much as I did in The Betrayal.
Spoilers ahead: The two deaths that occurred in The Sacrifice were not too shocking to me. There was forshadowing galore about the young people and the buggy racing. And I just "had a hunch" about the other person that died. I was waiting for Lizzie to somehow "make her way toward" Abram and maybe the two become a couple, but I have to remember: there are two more books.
The demise of the Smithy Gid/Leah engagement disappointed me more than it did the two of them, it seems! Wow, was she lukewarm about that, or what? I was rooting for them, though. He really seemed to replace her FAST. Makes me wonder just how much true love there was for her (Leah).
I had heard here (reviews) that there wasn't anything re.Sadie in this Book 3, so I wasn't shocked. I didn't even expect as much as there was at the very end. The fact that the door remains open for Leah to find Jonas is not at all surprising and I would call it predictable (but in a nice way).
I remain concerned though, about Leah just substituting her own life and future children to raise her two younger siblings . (yes I know, she is just a fictional character, but still!) I can just see her pouring out her entire soul and all her "good years" doing this, and in the end "have nothing" . After all , they are NOT HER children. I just feel like Abram expected too much of her, once again. Surely he could have let Gideon and Leah have the younger ones at their own, NEARBY, abode, and see them daily? I mean, Gideon and his eventual wife only moved as far away as Lizzie's cottage.! That , coupled with Abram's machinations of earlier to mess up things for Leah and Jonas, really made me somewhat angry w/him in this book. Again, I think Leah's "lack of" any real anger reaction is very atypical. Ms. Lewis either truly wished to portray Leah as a saint, or it is not very indepth writing as to how a REAL person would REALLY FEEL when finally realizing that largely due to their father, she missed her lifetime's chance with her one true love.
I am definitely finishing the series, and am very happy that The Sacrifice left me feeling touched and intrigued, rather than so "ferhoodled" as I was after finishing The Betrayal.

The Sacrifice Abram Daughters #3 Beverly Lewis 9780764228728 Books Reviews

I loved this series of books about the Amish life. Beverly Lewis is such an amazing writer, I felt as if I were right there in the Amish Community. Leah's life was not an easy one but through her faith in God and her family she was able to over come many obstacles. This series was so good I did not stop reading the books until I Finished the very last one. So very sad to read the last one, would love to know more about the next generations of Ebersols.
This is a must read for anyone wishing to gain an understanding of a culture different than the one you have experienced. It is a surprising variation the upbringing between the Amish culture and your own if not a part of it.
Truly enjoyed all 3 books. I thought the old order of the Amish is quite harsh and all I could think of is they lacked in mercy. The stories themselves had me were I couldn't put them down I felt all the emotions in these books. For me that is gut reading when I can smile, laugh, cry and even feel a wee bit angered. I look forward to the prodigal. Excellent reading.
This has been a great series! I found the first one as a free book and have just purchased the the fifth and last in the series. There is such evolving character development in these books and unlike some this book has twists and turns that keep you guessing and anxious to read more. I have felt a connection with the characters and their questions of faith in their lives. I also feel I have been a silent observer in the lives of an Amish family. I have enjoyed the interactions with the nearby "English" world and as I have taught my children "you can be in the world but not of the world" this series shows how that can be done. I don't think I would go as far as turning off my electricity or giving up my car but the simple lives they lead sometimes seems attractive. I good read - quick but still a thoughtful story.
Like all the Beverly Lewis I've read, this is a good read, but the third book in the series. Best to read them in order. I've read only one other series, Annie's people, and I find this series frustrating because of the misunderstandings and the patience needed in order to live through all of the complications. But it is a story of Christian faithfulness in the crucible of daily life and family expectations and is well worth reading.
This was actually the second time I've read this book. I have read the whole series (Abram's Daughters). This one was my least favorite of the series though mainly because there are some really sad events taking place in the story. But I will admit, life can be that way. And Beverly always addresses these things from a strong Christian perspective. Still, a bit too melodramatic for me........wish I had remembered that before I re-read it.
This review is for all 5 of the Abram's daughter's series. This was a disappointment from Beverly Lewis, whose books I usually enjoy. I found this series to be like a soap opera. The cast of characters was too large, and hard to keep track of who's who. Almost everyone in the books were an antagonist to the main character, Leah. I understand a story needs some conflict to resolve, but it was not nice having the story be an entire conflict. There was no safe place to be, while facing conflict. It was hard to find a character to associate with. Every time I tried, the character would just make decisions I would never make, etc. All the families involved were totally dysfunctional. Stretching this story into 5 books was just too long. Many times I wanted to put the books down, but kept reading just to give a fair review having read it all. I would have to say the last book was the best, with captivating action that should have been presented in about the second book, without all the extra filler dysfunctional plot lines.
